In 1958, a handful of local Christians gathered together at Roxbury School in Solon to establish a place where they could experience the presence and love of God together – a place from which they could be fed and nourished with God’s Word and Sacraments and equipped for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12). From those humble beginnings, Our Redeemer congregation was born. So who are the members of Our Redeemer?
The sign out front says we are Lutheran. What that means is that we believe, teach, and confess what the reformer, Dr. Martin Luther, believed, taught, and confessed, namely that we are saved by God's grace alone, through faith in Jesus alone, as revealed in Holy Scripture, which alone serves as our authority in matters of faith and life. Since this is what Christ taught, Lutherans are wholeheartedly Christian.
Of course, Lutherans are also catholic. The word “catholic” is Greek in origin and means “according to the whole.” We are catholic because what we teach is in accord with what the whole Christian Church of all times and places has taught. Thus, Lutheranism is not a new sect or religion that sprang up during the Reformation. It is a continuation of the one, historic, Christian faith of all times and places.
Still more, Lutherans are evangelical. In fact, Lutherans were first called Evangelicals. The word “evangelical” is also Greek in origin and means “good news.” Lutherans are evangelical because the good news or “Gospel” of what God has done for us in Christ, and continues to do for us in Christ through Word and Sacrament, is central to all our doctrine and practice.
Lutherans are also evangelical in the sense that evangelism plays a significant role in our lives as Christians. And so, continuing the legacy of our forebearers here at Our Redeemer, we seek with the help of God to reach out to a lost and hurting world with the good news of God’s love in Christ Jesus. Indeed, we seek to lead people to Jesus, as He is found in Word and Sacrament, so that they too may receive the gifts He freely gives.
Our mission: “Creating community by connecting people to Christ and His family.” To the people of Solon, Twinsburg, and the surrounding areas, many of whom are experiencing ever greater isolation, loss of relationships, and fear of the breakdown of families and community, we seek to be an ever expanding Christian community where relationships and families grow, where forgiveness and faith replace fear, and where eternal joy dispels sadness and despair.
Here at Our Redeemer, you will find a family of Christ’s disciples who are “devoted to the Apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer” (Acts 2:42). We are united in the love God has for each of us. Although we are not perfect, we are forgiven by God's grace and we strive to live the faith we confess and to love and support one another. We would love for you to be a part of our family! “Come and see the works of God who is awesome in deeds toward the children of man.” (Psalm 66:5).
